At first glance, the German army sleeping bag looks strange. This is because it looks like a suit with its arms. However, on the other side of the coin, these arms are just what makes the German army sleeping bag rather intriguing and sought after.

German Army Sleeping Bag

If you have never seen a German army sleeping bag, it just looks like a spacesuit of sorts. However, aside from its unusual outward design, what should sell is whether it does a good job of providing enough comfort and convenience for the user.

The advantage of having your arms outside of the sleeping bag is easy to see. You are not restricted in movement for one. You could read, reach for a drink, and be fully functional up until the time you fall asleep. If you are sleeping outdoors, you can be ready to defend yourself at the drop of a hat because you do not need to zip down to free your arms.

Other advantages of the German army sleeping bag is the fact that because it is a zipper at the bottom, you can stand up without even getting out of your sleeping bag! If you are a hunter or fisherman, you can actually use your sleeping bag in the early hours of the morning to keep warm, and still be able to target shoot or fish.

Speaking of warmth, if you are going to use it under extremely cold weather conditions, make sure that it has an inner sleeping bag. Otherwise, it is generally capable of handling reasonable cold weather conditions. This modular design makes it one of the better winter camping sleeping bags. In fact, it will not be wise to use this when the weather is hot especially if you tend to get hot easily.

Understanding the logic behind the German army sleeping bag should not be difficult. The arm sleeves are there to help the German soldiers get into attack and defense positions easily. The reason the bottom half can be opened up is because it allows the German soldiers to use the sleeping bag as a parka – thus, a dual purpose.

The price of a German army sleeping bag is not even exorbitant, far from it. You will be able to find one below US$50, maybe much lower if you are persistent and keen on getting the best deal available. Of course, most German army sleeping bags are sold as a surplus item, and this means that supply is not constant or steady. Nevertheless, as a alternative choice for camping and outdoor adventure trips, this German army sleeping bag is really worth looking into.

Recently, people have been e-mailing be a lot of the same questions. So, I thought that it would be a great idea to do a regular column on reader questions. Here’s the first of many to come: What’s the best economy 10 degree sleeping bag?

If your primary concern is spending the least amount of money on a sleeping bag, you will have to compromise on some features. However, this is not to say that the best economy 10 degree sleeping bag is not going to do a proper job of giving you a good night’s sleep.

To find the best economy 10 degree sleeping bag, aside from the price, you need to also consider manufacturer, quality, materials used, shape and weight. In other words, it is possible to find a very reasonable 10 degree sleeping bag, but if it won’t even last through the weekend, then it definitely becomes a very expensive sleeping bag.

When talking about 10 degree economy sleeping bags, you need to factor in durability, even before price. The best 10 degree economy sleeping bag should be part of your camping gear for many trips. Thus, even if you have to pay a little extra today, but will be able to use the sleeping bag for at least 5 years, then you would have saved yourself a lot more than just dollars. This is because prices of everything just keeps going up while the quality of materials used are not.

The reason why the manufacturer is an important factor is because a branded product carries it with a reputation, and if that reputation is excellent, then you can expect to not complain about the sleeping bag somewhere down the road.

Check the insulating materials also because this will spell the difference between a cold night and a “freezing your socks off” night. Most new sleeping bags either are made with synthetic insulating material or goose down material. The best 10 degree economy sleeping bag for you will depend on your personal preferences.

If you tend to get cold easily, then select the sleeping bag made of goose down insulating material. Furthermore, it’s lighter, easier to pack, and much more durable. If you want to get one made of synthetic material, then buy a sleeping pad to get extra warm.

On the other hand, the choice of insulating material should also depend on the weather conditions and camping sites you plan to visit. This is because if you plan to go anywhere close to water, synthetic material will be the better option. A goose down or a marmot down sleeping bag will not keep you warm if it gets wet.

Finally, the best economy 10 degree sleeping bag should not that heavy, although the lighter ones are the more expensive ones, so the choice will need to be weighed between convenience, price, and durability. Also a compact sleeping bag is more convenient to carry and store, but it doesn’t help keep you warm when it’s freezing outside. An ultralight down sleeping bag can be a fantastic choice, but you have to remember that you’re paying more for the lighter weight and the more compact size.

I know, I know, you just want me to tell you which one to go buy. Well, I’m not going to to it. Why? Because there really is no “best” economy 10 degree sleeping bag because the best sleeping bag will very depending on your camping conditions.

Follow the guidelines above and take a look at some online retailers. Once you find a sleeping bag that meets the criteria above, read a sleeping bag review on the product and you’ll no doubt get the best sleeping bag for your needs.
